Health Benefits
- Hair Loss Prevention: Some small studies suggest that oral or topical saw palmetto may help improve hair density and slow hair thinning by blocking 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to pattern baldness. However, evidence remains limited and more large-scale research is needed.
- Urinary and Prostate Support: Saw palmetto is widely marketed for lower urinary tract symptoms linked to an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH), such as weak urine flow or nighttime waking. While some short-term trials show mild symptom relief, large-scale clinical reviews and major health organizations note that it is often no more effective than a placebo.
- Hormonal and Inflammatory Balance: The plant’s natural fatty acids and sterols are thought to offer mild anti-inflammatory properties and may influence sex hormone activity, though these uses lack definitive proof.
